I got hired!!

in Worth a Look

This blog hasn’t been updated since May, but I got an interesting tale to share tonight. Hopefully, it interests you too.

About 4 days ago, I got hired at a famous Korean firm as a translator. So, how did this happen? Here’s the story.

One of my mom’s friend is a wife of a chief of a well known Korean pharmaceutical company which set up their research laboratory in Hyderabad about a year ago. We knew the couple ever since they launched their office and we have rented rooms every 6 months for the company’s researchers.

By the end of the last month, the company prepared a research report to submit to the headquarters, but the headquarters have asked them to re-submit the report translated into English. Obviously, not many Koreans here are fluent in English and struggled translating the report.

Since this is the company’s research report, they also couldn’t trust any translator.

One of the researchers, currently staying in our rented room had suggested that they hire me for this work. Some samples were shown to me and I was offered the job.

I thought this might be an excellent experience as well as a good chance to boost up my college application and I took the job. :)

Initially, I was asked to suggest my rate for translating about 40 pages of the report.

I didn’t want to lose this opportunity by demanding a high price. Also that I’m just a student and not a professional, I wanted to call a low price, but I also thought a work that involves translating a scientific report will eat up my brain quite a bit.

This actually isn’t my very first translating job that I was offered. I once was paid about $20 for translating a report mail of 3 pages for a Korean mechanical firm.

After taking quite a time to think over how much I should be paid, I decided $350 was a fairly good price. The company and I negotiated for sometime and we settled for $250.

After agreeing to the company’s non-disclosure agreement of contents of the report, I was officially hired!

I started my job last Friday night. I sat down with two of the researchers and I translated as they explained the report to me.

Well, I have to admit it was pretty damn hard. The work seemed much harder than the samples and translating a medical research report with tons of scientific vocabularies that I never even heard of.

However, I managed the first two days and things really started to get more easy as the words and some part of the report kept repeating in the further documents. I’m now being able to translate more smoothly and fluently than before.

I would like to thank the company for hiring me and also to my wonderful mom for giving me this opportunity! :)
